I lead because there was no-one else.

Contrary to the popular belief that leaders are born, or made, I think that the most exciting of leaders are those that are “summoned”.  What do I mean by that?

Life and work, today, throw up many challenges.  Many of us don’t rise to those challenge!  Others do.  What about those people, moved by a passion or a need, step up to meet that need?

Often, when times seem desperate, someone is “summoned” to lead.  They feel so strongly, so passionately, about the purpose, the vision, the plan that, if there is no-one else, they step up – and lead.  And lead with all the attributes of one who was supposedly “born” or “trained” to be a leader.  For me, Mother Theresa was such a leader.

The Leadership Lab’s Blog has recently written more about this in its mini-series “Three popular myths about leadership”. I love the way that Kate Mercer expresses this point. Please go and read more from Kate.

The Leadership Lab and I agree.  However, you might not. Why don’t you agree?

When should a “summoned leader” hand over to one who has been trained to lead?  Or should they hand over?

Thank you for taking the time to visit me here.  I appreciate any feedback that you care to give. Please add a comment to introduce yourself, or add value to what I have written in this post.  Kate.
