Seek character – your reputation will follow.

“Leadership is a combination of strategy and character. If you must be without one, be without strategy.” ~General Norman Schwarzkopf

“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.” ~Coach John Wooden

“Look after your character and your reputation will look after itself.” ~Lord Sugar (Alan Sugar)

Looking at these quotes it would seem that character is imperative if you wish to be a leader.  Many people who have developed their character have gone on to be leaders – even though they didn’t seek the role.  However, many leaders, who have forgotten the value of character, have fallen.

Here’s my take on some of the major character traits that people will look out for:

  • self-discipline
  • a willingness to continue learning
  • humble attitude
  • generous
  • Integrity
  • Consistency

Work on these everyday and you won’t have time to worry about your reputation!

You can add to this list of character traits by adding your comments below.  I’d love that.

I also build up, train and encourage others to achieve more than they thought possible.

Hi Kate, I love your posts and this article is great. I believe that, even as children, we start building our reputation by our conduct. Don’t we all remember the school bully? And if we bump into him or her years later, don’t we remember that person as a bully? Yes, I agree: “Character is imperative if you wish to be a leader.” For me, one of the most outstanding character traits about Jesus is that He never expected anything from His followers that He was not prepared to do Himself -He led by example. Thanks for an insightful post 🙂

      Hi Ula
Thank you for stopping by and taking the time to comment on this post. I appreciate it.
You hint at the humility of Jesus in your comment. I completely agree that a great leader is a humble leader, one who will be prepared to get his hands dirty.
Looking forward to engaging more with you and sharing and learning together.
