Photography – learning to be creative.

It’s good to give yourself a challenge from time to time and learn a new skill.  You might surprise yourself and find that you are actually good at it!

Many people, once their career or family is established, take up new hobbies.  Well, I’m going to join them.  I’ve been loaned a decent camera and I’m going to see if I ‘have the eye’ for photography.

It’s not the first time that I have picked up a camera.  My father has nearly always had a camera in his possession and, as he upgraded his cameras, he would occasionally pass on his used ones to me.  But then I started working, my life got busy, and my photography started to take a back seat.  But I have the time now, and more interestingly, the inclination to start again.

There is an interesting dynamic going on with me in the middle of this.  As mentioned in an earlier post, I am a sanguine/phlegmatic personality type.  That means I have a strong leaning toward creativity.  During the last 20 years or so, I have doubted this side of me, even telling myself that “I’m not creative.”  What I meant by that was “I can’t paint, draw or sculpt”.  However, I’m learning that creativity is so much more than that.  I’ve found that it can also be

  • the ability to have ideas
  • designing new things/interior design
  • landscaping/gardening
  • writing poetry/books/plays/comedy sketches/blogs
  • singing/playing a musical instrument
  • performing/acting
  • directing/producing
  • cooking new foods/dishes

Now that my horizon is expandeing in this area I can see how creative I am.  I have been actively doing much of the above for years and now see it as tapping into my creativity.

I think I am going to enjoy exploring this area of me which, for so long, I have shut down.  It will be wonderful to see what is revealed.  For starters, one of my first efforts is above.  All encouragement gratefully received 🙂

What parts of yourself have you shut down?

What new hobby would you like to try out and why?

Thank you for taking the time to visit me here.  I appreciate any feedback that you care to give. Please add a comment to introduce yourself, or add value to what I have written in this post.
